On one of the days that we did not have a step-on guide, Diane took the mic and toured the students through Alexandria, VA, which she certainly did not need to do on her day off! I also appreciated a warning when they saw that some students were about to take too much money into a shopping situation. They took the time to give them some “big city” pointers on how to split up money and how not to flash it about. Something that rural kids really don’t think about. Four chaperones certainly cannot watch 39 students in every situation and knowing that the drivers were also watching out for our kids meant so much to us!"

"I have just returned from a six day bus trip to Washington D.C. with the Pulaski High School Red Raider Marching Band. The trip was a great success and a wonderful experience for students and chaperones alike. A major contributing factor to this enjoyable experience was due to the drivers, equipment, safety and service provided by Lamers. I am a safety professional that has spent the last 10 years as a safety director and loss prevention manager for Schneider National, Inc and Schneider National Bulk Carriers with the responsibility of driver training, compliance, security and operations. In addition, I hold a valid Wisconsin Commercial Drivers License and am now employed as the Director of Safety operations for Standfast USA, Chicago. It is with this professional experience that I will base the following comments on.
All of the drivers on our trip acted professionally and safely. In particular, I would like to call out the operators of my motor coach. As the lead chaperone of my bus, I had the opportunity to sit in the front seat and observe our drivers in action. It was obvious to me early on in the trip that our bus was being operated by true professionals. Let me just list a few of the driver skill items I noticed:
• Minimum of a seven second following distance
• Continuing mirror scanning
• Operating within posted speed guidelines and obeying traffic control devices
• Adjusting speed and following distance for construction zones
• Stopping at all railroad crossings
• Safe Lane Changes
• Timely updating of logs
• Pre and post trip inspections
• Solid slow maneuver skills
• Checking intersections before entering
• Confident and competent in both interstate and city driving situations
• Genuine concern for the safety of the passengers and the motoring public
• Insuring they took their breaks
Over the years I have had the opportunity to ride in buses operated by a variety of motor coach companies; some of which I have actually suggested that the driver stop for a break because I observed them nodding out at the wheel. This has never been the case with Lamers.
As a safety professional, I am trained to observe skills and behaviors, but as a businessman I am trained to recognize quality service and how to build relationships. It is in this area that Mike and Vern really shine. Operating on today’s roads is no easy task and as you know, it can be very demanding on a driver. These gentlemen did the hard work with a smile. They encouraged the students, applauded the students after their event, answered a million questions, adapted to short notice schedule changes, insured their comfort, acted as a tour guide, entertained us and really supported the chaperones. In essence, [these drivers] became part of our band. Friendly and quality customer service seems harder and harder to find in today’s world, but apparently it is alive and well at Lamers. A quality company with quality drivers. Thanks for making our trip a wonderful experience."
