Safety Manager (School Bus)

Safety Manager works with drivers to ensure driver standards are met and maintained throughout company. Safety Manager maintains compliance with DOT, FMCSA and CSA. Safety Manager executes established safety policies throughout company. Safety Manager responds to accidents or incidents, driver questions or concerns, and is involved with coaching and driver training.

Safety Manager makes sure that all drivers are qualified and up-to-date on licensing. In addition, Safety Manager must also be able to meet the qualifications for a school bus driver and will agree to hold and maintain CDL and proper endorsements.

Qualifications – Competency/Experience/Educational requirements

  • 5+ years safety management experience. Formal schooling in transportation/safety related field preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, CSA regulations.
  • Expert knowledge – log auditing and hour of service regulations for USA and Canada.
  • Expert knowledge of 49 CFR drug and alcohol regulations.
  • Extensive leadership experience in safety.
  • Effective communication, negotiation, and persuasion skills.
  • Highly “detail” orientated.
  • Strong organizational skills and process orientated.
  • Must be able to think and react quickly in adverse situations.
  • Computer literate with the ability to grasp new software and technology and develop/suggest new applications.
  • Must be able to meet the job description of a school bus driver, obtain a class B CDL with the appropriate endorsement(s) and free of an airbrake restriction.

Responsibilities

The following list is some of the major responsibilities of the Safety Manager.

  1. Maintain driver files, qualifications for school bus drivers.
  2. Hands-on driver recruitment, selection to driver hiring.
  3. Conduct regular safety meetings. Work with school bus staff to develop materials.
  4. Review or investigate driver accidents as instructed.
  5. Drive bus on route or charter as needed.
  6. Weekend duty rotations with other managers will occur.
