DAY TWO – CB
Our westward journey continues into the Great Plains of the United States. We pause for a visit at Father Flanagan’s Girls & Boys Town in Omaha. A campus guide will join us for our visit explaining the purpose and mission of Boys Town. See Dowd Chapel, Hall of History and the Father Flanagan House. We continue across Nebraska headed for Ogallala and our overnight accommodations at the Lonesome Dove Lodge.
DAY THREE – CB
The flat prairie scenery begins to disappear today as we head into the Rocky Mountain region and Colorado. We will spend the night in Grand Junction as guests of the LaQuinta Inn.
DAY FOUR – L
Today we arrive and view our first park, Arches National Park in Utah. Extraordinary features of the park create a landscape of contrasting colors and textures unlike any other in the world while preserving over 2,000 natural sandstone arches. The forces of nature have revealed millions of years of geological history. We will stay near Bryce Canyon with time to enjoy the beautiful night sky and delightful Quality Inn.
DAY FIVE – L
Bryce Canyon is famous for its red rock spires and horseshoe shaped amphitheaters. Enjoy the spectacular scenery as we head to nearby Zion National Park. Here massive canyon walls ascend to azure blue skies. The towering cliffs range in color from pink to cream to red. They are often described as sand castles crowning desert canyons. Arrive in Page, AZ later today and spend the next two nights at the Holiday Inn.
Today we take time to visit Mother Nature’s showstopper, the Grand Canyon. Carved by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon is considered to be one of the major wonders of the world. We will travel along the South Rim making several stops for pictures. Marvel at the brightly colored Painted Desert as we make our way to the Historic Cameron Trading Post before heading back to our hotel.
DAY SEVEN – L
We enjoy a change of pace today as we take a relaxing cruise on the sapphire waters of Lake Powell. More than 400 feet deep, Lake Powell surrounds us with dramatic red rocks, secluded coves and rosy beaches. Later we pause at Navajo National Monument, preserving three intact cliff dwellings of the Puebloan people. Our overnight will be in Kayenta, AZ, part of the Navajo Nation at the Hampton Inn.
DAY EIGHT – CB, L, D
This morning we board special vehicles to view the sheer spires of Monument Valley. The area is noted for its vast and iconic sandstone buttes. Later we will stop at Four Corners Monument, the only point in the United States where four states meet. The Holiday Inn Express is our host for the evening. Located inside Mesa Verde National Park, we will enjoy the elegant décor designed to reflect the true essence of Mesa Verde.
DAY NINE – CB, L
Mesa Verde, Spanish for “green table,” offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Pueblo people who lived here for more than 700 years. View the unusual cliff dwellings, some of the most notable and well preserved in the United States. We will enjoy a special Mesa Verde Heritage Feast before heading to Durango, CO for our overnight stay and the Comfort Inn.
DAY TEN – CB
After crossing the Continental Divide today, we take a scenic ride through the rugged San Juan and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges aboard the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Constructed to haul silver and gold ore from the San Juan Mountains, passengers soon realized it was the scenery that was special. The train has operated continuously for more than 125 years. Our overnight will be in Alamosa, CO at the Comfort Inn.
DAY ELEVEN – CB
Dodge City, once known as the “wickedest city in the west” and its famous Boot Hill are on the agenda for today. We overnight in Great Bend, KS located on the big bend of the Arkansas River. Enjoy the Hampton Inn this evening.
DAY TWELVE – CB
Today we head for Abilene, KS, the hometown of Dwight D. Eisenhower and visit his Presidential Library & Museum. Tonight we return to Des Moines, IA for our last night out again at the Drury Inn & Suites.
