Rhine River Cruise To Christkindlmarkts
Departure Date: December 3-11
Tour Code: RHIN99

FEATURING: The Amadeus Silver II River Ship traveling through Switzerland, France and Germany. FLIGHT INCLUDED!

DAY ONE
So many intrepid travelers have thought about taking one of those European river cruises and now is your chance. Traveling to popular Christkindlmarkts is a wonderful way to enjoy the magical holiday season, travel the shoulder season with fewer crowds AND gain treasured memories of a relaxing, stress-free European cruise vacation. Most of our first day’s travel will be experiencing our included overnight flight to Zurich, Switzerland.

DAY TWO
This morning we land in Zurich and travel to nearby Lucerne for our first Christmas Market experience. The Franziskanerplatz lies at the heart of Lucerne's Old Town with a delightful Christmas carousel swirling at its center. The courtyard is filled with dozens of market stalls where the Swiss sell warm food of all kinds and of course, mulled wine (Glühwein) to help ward off any chill. Tonight finds us at the Hotel Astoria right in Lucerne.

DAY THREE — B, D
Refreshed and ready to start our day, a local guide joins us at the hotel for an historical and educational walking tour of Lucerne. Known for its preserved medieval architecture, Lucerne sits amid snowcapped mountains on Lake Lucerne. Its colorful Old Town is bordered on the north by a 14-century rampart with a covered bridge built in 1333! Much to learn here for sure!

With a little free time to explore on your own later today, we board a motor coach and travel to Basel, the boarding point for our river ship. This evening finds us on board the Amadeus Silver II. Explore your home for the next week then make your way to the dining room for one of many elegant dinners complete with wine.

DAY FOUR — B, L, S, D
Hopefully you are enjoying a relaxing glide down the Rhine and are being immersed into the cruising life. Throughout the day, breakfast, lunch dinner and a variety of snacks are lovingly prepared and presented to guests. Peering out the ships’ windows provide us with a wonderful smorgasbord of fairytale visions.

Today we pause in the city of Strasbourg, France. We are transported to the local Christmas market located in the city center. Original medieval structures surround the many food and craft stalls of this enduring annual marketplace. Soak in the ancient atmosphere while in Strasbourg also known as ‘Le Petit Paris.’ This evening you are back on board the Amadeus Silver II for meals and evening entertainment.

DAY FIVE — B, L, S, D
Once again the morning brings more picturesque views from our ship. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast as we glide along to the town of Speyer. We’re now in Germany and a local guide joins our group for a walking tour of this quintessential German city. The enchanting Christmas and New Year market is held in front of the Old Mint on the famous Maximilianstrasse, with a view of the romantic imperial cathedral. At the heart of the action are stalls hosted by eight Speyer sister cities from as far away as Rwanda.

Later today our cruising takes us to Mannheim, Germany. There will be time to wander the beautiful old world streets on your own or take an optional excursion to Heidelberg to visit the red-walled castle and to experience the gorgeous Neckar Valley.

DAY SIX — B, L, S, D
Cruising through the night finds us in Rudesheim, Germany where we embark on another get-acquainted walking tour. It will include a visit to Siegfried’s Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum. Rudesheim is filled with delightful taverns and restaurants for your enjoyment too.

The ship will depart later today traveling through the Rhine River Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dotted with castles, historic towns and vineyards, this is undoubtedly the most stunning stretch of the river. Germany’s oldest city of Koblenz is our next stop situated at the confluence of the Rhine & Moselle Rivers. See the famous Advent Calendar at their baroque Town Hall and of course the charming Christmas Markt located there.

DAY SEVEN — B, L, S, D
Our ship makes a detour along the Mosel River to the little town of Cochem, Germany. The magnificent Reichsburg Castle is situated high above the town, dominating the hilly landscape. Below this imposing structure, the village of Cochem is filled with half-timbered houses along quaint, narrow streets. Numerous restaurants line both sides of the Mainstrasse and is an ideal setting to taste the many wines of the region.

Today we also have our get acquainted walking tour for those interested and don’t forget, Cochem also has a charming Christmas Market.

DAY EIGHT — B, L, S, D
Today finds us in Cologne, Germany’s 4th largest city and located on both sides of the Rhine. Learn about the old town and visit its fabled 13th century Gothic cathedral.

You have plenty of free time today exploring on your own the dockside taverns, cafes, shops and the famous Christmas market right in front of the commanding cathedral. Tonight enjoy a Farewell Dinner on board the ship as it is moored here in Cologne.

DAY NINE — B
Our final day is upon us as we are transferred to the airport for our included flight home. Say ‘Auf Wiedersehen’ while enjoying fond memories of a relaxed river cruise.
