Autumn on the Algoma Central Railway

Departure Dates: Sept. 21-25; Sept. 28-Oct. 2; Oct. 5-9

Tour Code: AMxx90

Off we go to autumn splendor in the wilds of southern Ontario. Our travels take us through Wisconsin and into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for our first of two nights at the Comfort Inn, Sault Ste. Marie, MI.

Wake up with adventure on your mind as we transfer to the nearby train station for our all-day rail excursion through the forests of Canada. The Algoma Central Railway has been made ultra-comfortable for our trip. Large viewing windows, all tinted glass, flat screen monitors with locomotive mounted digital cameras, new carpeting and a GPS triggered tour narration keeps us informed on the beautiful lakes, rivers and rock formations along the way. Passing trestles, bridges, and open canyons, we will make our way to to scenic Agawa Canyon where you will have free time to enjoy walking the canyon for many scenic vistas.  After our return trip enjoy an evening at leisure.

Today we spend the day here in Sault Ste. Marie first visiting the Visitor Center to learn the process of the largest vessel locking system on the Great Lakes. Then take a cruise to see all four U.S. Locks, St. Mary’s Rapids, giant hydro-electric plants and an historic Canadian Lock. Experience “locking through” from Lake Huron and Lake Superior. Then cruise underneath the International Highway Bridge and get a sailor’s view of many interesting sites all narrated for a superior experience. Be amazed as you cruise along side giant lake freighters and huge ocean vessels. Lunch will be enjoyed at the famous Antlers Restaurant, a legendary landmark across from the south-end of the Soo Locks, serving Northern Cuisine in a rustic atmosphere with over 200 animal mounts everywhere in the restaurant. A fun and interesting place for a meal before heading to Mackinaw City, MI for our two night stay at the Hamilton Inn Select.

This morning finds us at the ferry entrance as we make our way through the Straits of Mackinac to quaint Mackinac Island. As we deboard the ferry our waiting horse-drawn carriage welcomes us to this island devoid of motor vehicles then takes us on a tour of its many unusual and historic sites. We finish the tour at lunch time as we pull up as so many did before us, to the famous Grand Hotel. Here we enjoy a lavish, gourmet luncheon buffet before having the afternoon free to wander Main Street with its many delightful shops. Sit back and enjoy the view from a bench near the harbor and don’t forget to sample their world-famous fudge. We depart the island later this afternoon and return to our hotel. The evening is once again free for independent activities in bustling Mackinac City.

It’s time to pack up for the return journey southward bound. What a great time we’ve had in the northern reaches of Michigan, Wisconsin and our Canadian neighbor. We return home later this afternoon.
