For all of you Ralphie fans who identify with his Red Ryder blues, this is the tour for you! Relive the antics of this beloved family classic movie with a visit to the actual house many of the outdoor scenes were filmed. Today, we get as far as the Toledo area for our first overnight in Ohio and the Hampton Inn Maumee.
DAY TWO — CB
Enroute to Cleveland, we pause for a tour at the Museum of Divine Statues. Started by restoration artist Lou McClung and housed in a former church, Lou has created a reflective and reverential space where ecclesiastical statues from around the world can be displayed and admired. Amazing statuary and other Catholic art pieces are not only restored but many are recreated for existing churches to once again display. Learn more about this man’s divine calling.
No visit to the Cleveland area would be complete without stopping at the iconic Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Opening in 1995, this institution recognizes and archives the history of the best-known and most influential artists, producers, engineers, and other notable figures that have had some major influence on the development of rock and roll. Seven levels in the building include exhibits on the roots of rock and roll, gospel, rhythm & blues, country and bluegrass.
Later we check into the Drury Inn Plaza, Cleveland for the next two nights. After the sun sets, we gather for a fabulous drive through light display at nearby Nela Park. This is the headquarters for GE Lighting so you know the displays will be spectacular!
DAY THREE — CB, L
The first event of the day is our tour of The Christmas House. Now restored to its movie splendor and directly across the street from A Christmas Story Museum, see original props, costumes and memorabilia from the film, as well as hundreds of rare behind-the-scenes photos. Among the props and costumes are toys from Higbee’s window, Randy’s snowsuit, the chalkboard from Miss Shields’ classroom and the family car!
We then travel to the city’s fabled Westside Market. Home to over 100 vendors of great ethnic diversity visitors will find not only fine meats and fresh vegetables, but also fresh seafood, baked goods, dairy and cheese products, Even fresh flowers. There are also booths that sell ready-to-eat foods, herbs, candy and nuts.
Don’t snack too much though because we’re off to another famous local spot for lunch. Sokolowski’s University Inn has been serving up Polish specialties to hungry patrons since 1923. Cleveland’s Botanical Gardens and its GLOW Exhibit has dozens of sparkling trees twinkling with the sounds of our favorite carols lilting through the night air. Finally, sit back and enjoy a live stage performance of the Christmas classic The Christmas Story.
DAY FOUR — CB, L
What a great few days we’ve already enjoyed. It’s time to depart Cleveland enroute towards home. We pause for some last minute shopping and a filling luncheon at the Blue Gate Restaurant as we pass through Indiana. Merry Christmas!
