All Aboard! Lamers Tour & Travel has planned a special tour to experience what our customer’s love…scenic rail travel. Couple that with the beauty of New England’s fall color in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine and it can barely get any better! Today we travel to our first night accommodations at the Best Western Plus, Sandusky, OH with dinner included at a nearby local eatery.
DAY TWO — CB, D
Looking forward to getting further east, travels today take us into New York State with our usual rest and meal breaks. After time to refresh and relax at our hotel, the Fairfield Inn Utica, we will gather with our new friends for dinner.
DAY THREE — CB, D
After breakfast we’re rolling down the road again, but not too far. The Adirondack Scenic Train awaits nearby for our two hour ride through remote forests, past sparkling rivers, over bridges and tranquil ponds and into the magnificent beauty of Adirondack Park. Witness Mother Nature’s handiwork as you pass through, enroute to the town of Thendara.
Once you arrive, we once again board our motorcoach and travel a short distance to Old Forge, NY. Here you will have time to stroll into charming shops and enjoy lunch on your own. This afternoon you’re in for a real treat. Our group will get the chance to ride the railroad tracks under your own power on a Railbike Tour. During your tour you will travel through the beautiful Adirondack forest canopy along the banks of the Hudson River. This is indeed a very different way to see the real eastern countryside. Later finds us at our full-service hotel in Ticonderoga, NY. The Best Western Inn & Suites is our host for the evening. Freshen up for dinner this evening.
DAY FOUR — CB, L, D
After breakfast, our motorcoach is waiting as we travel into the Green Mountains and to the renowned Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont. The Sound of Music resonates as you arrive at this old-world lodge, owned and operated by the von Trapp family. Dine on a delicious Austrian luncheon buffet while you enjoy the mountain views and fall color display.
Next up is everyone favorite. No ‘screaming for ice cream’ needed! We stop at Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory for a tour and tasting of Vermont’s finest. Just try to make a decision on which flavor to pick and the end of the tour! Tonight we rest your head in the Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee, VT this evening. Dinner will be right here in the hotel’s lovely dining room..
DAY FIVE — CB, D
Once again we board the coach and set out on a day filled with adventure. The first stop this morning as we travel through the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire will be at Franconia Notch State Park. Here we soar to the 4,180 foot summit of Cannon Mountain in an aerial tramway. There will be time for stunning photos and a warm beverage before we depart for Woodstock, NH. Here you can stroll various eateries as we enjoy the local atmosphere of the area.
After lunch board a canopied pontoon boat and sail off into Squam Lake, the second largest lake in New Hampshire. It is also where the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond was filmed. This evening we have a glamorous attraction waiting for us. The lovely Café Lafayette Dinner Train takes us on a scenic two-hour ride along with a 5-course meal as we ride the rails like they did so many years ago. Sit back and enjoy this wonderful train. Our accommodations are the Town Place Suites in the town of Gilford, NH surrounded by the White Mountains.
DAY SIX — CB, L, D
We check out of our hotel following breakfast and travel through the Lakes Region to Exeter, NH. Board the Downeaster Train for a 145 mile journey to Boston’s North Station. Operated by Amtrak this regional passenger train runs daily mostly for the locals in the area. While Boston is not emphasized on this tour group does have time to enjoy lunch in historic Faneuil Hall & Quincy Marketplace. Located in the heart of the city, experience the shops and wonderful eateries located here. Tonight finds us in New London, CT and the Holiday Inn. Relax before gathering together for another included dinner.
DAY SEVEN — CB, L, D
Today we motor to the first commercial steam locomotive in the United States. The Stourbridge Lion ran roundtrip just three miles between Honesdale, PA and Seelyville beginning on August 8, 1829. Learn a little about this railway at our first stop, the Wayne County Historical Museum. With a full-scale replica of the original train, photographs and artifacts you will have a better understanding of the long history of the upper Delaware Valley and the line.
After our visit walk down the street to the Stourbridge Railroad Company for a 1.5 hour train trip through the Northern Poconos. The engineer will share tales of the region’s rich history as you gaze at the beautiful countryside along the Lackawaxen River Gorge. Your ‘ticket to ride” includes a picnic lunch to enjoy in the table car before the train returns to its starting point. Travels continue onboard our motorcoach to Lancaster, PA. The full-service Cork Factory Hotel once housed the Armstrong Cork and Kerr Glass companies. Enjoy the hotel’s convenient downtown location with the opportunity to discover a great new restaurant for dinner on your own.
DAY EIGHT — CB, L, D
Gather for breakfast this morning before our local guide joins our group for a comprehensive tour of Amish Country here in Pennsylvania. This fascinating two-hour tour back in time will take us through picturesque countryside and farmland, past buggies, covered bridges and the history of the Amish lifestyle. We’ll even visit a shop on an Amish farm and meet the owner.
Railroad of course, crisscross this area and our tour is all about trains so our next visit will be the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Discover a world-class collection of more than 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, plus art, artifacts and captivating personal stories of the area’s rich heritage. Just across the street is the Strasburg Railroad. Board the larger-than-life steam train at Noon and enjoy a 45 minute, ride through the tranquil Amish countryside to Paradise, PA.
By this time you will have worked up an appetite. Gather for an included lunch at the Plain & Fancy Restaurant. The Sight and South Theatre has productions and musicals like none other. Spectacular staging is what you can expect when you take your seat for the musical Queen Esther. Set in the opulent yet perilous Persian Empire, the focus of this brand-new epic show is a captivating tale of beauty and bravery. Prepare to be amazed. To finish off this already fantastic day, our matinee show ends and we head to Lydia’s home for a real homemade Amish meal in her home, right down to freshly brewed mint tea!
DAY NINE — B, L
Bid farewell to the beautiful rolling Amish countryside as we begin our travels westward. Our lunch today will be at the historic Grand Concourse Restaurant, housed and preserved in a Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad Station. Our final overnight will be in the Hampton Inn Toledo.
DAY TEN — CB
Continuing toward home we enjoy the camaraderie of our new friends and look forward to the next time we can travel again on a great Lamers tour!
